Clara-Clara

Laura Vinci, Brazil

When: 1 September to 18 December 2006

Public lighting took on a new dimension in Laura Vinci’s dramatic, luminous installation. High above your head, LaTrobe Place hosted a series of peculiar and amorphous soft sculptures suspended between the buildings. Each mesh form was created from standard industrial materials and contains a number of familiar outdoor street light fixtures. Bundled together with a yarn-like tangle of wires, the lights swelled the sculptures into organic shapes; a contrast to the strict linear surroundings.

Clara-Clara wants to complicate and to invert light’s visibility, which is at once bare and invisible, by covering the piece’s actual light with wire mesh...in order to become visible the light has to force its way through the mesh’s gaps. - Laura Vinci

Laura Vinci acknowledges the support of the International Artist in Residence Program, the MFA Program and the Public Art Program in the School of Art at RMIT University.
