Melbourne Conversations
Melbourne Conversations – Getting Melbourne Talking
A series of free public discussions presented by the City of Melbourne, Melbourne Conversations has been getting Melbourne talking since 2001. The program of talks has engaged our diverse community and contributed to our lively civic culture and public intellectual life.
The aim of the program is to contribute to the expression of topical ideas and opinions on wide ranging topics and build an informal network of active citizens who are connected to the world and engaged with Melbourne’s diverse culture. A hallmark of the program is the opportunity to ask questions and have your say.
The program has covered a wide range of topics since its inception including homelessness, gender issues, the nature of our democracy, land rights, human rights, religion, sustainability, the financial crisis, terrorism, peak oil issues, international students and the arts – all discussed by over 400 acclaimed guest speakers.
To date, over 40,000 enthusiastic attendees from a diverse range of backgrounds and ages have attended more than 130 Melbourne Conversation events.
Many Melbourne Conversations topics are jointly developed with external partners including state government departments, universities, philanthropic organisations, professional associations, international conferences, festivals, galleries and local community and arts organisations.
