The City of Melbourne has appointed Dr Kathy Alexander as its new Chief Executive, following a unanimous decision at tonight’s Special Council meeting.
Dr Kathy Alexander, former CEO of Women’s & Children’s Health, comes to the role with a national reputation for stakeholder and community engagement and has extensive experience in leading large and complex organisations.
Lord Mayor John So said Kathy was chosen from a field of high-calibre candidates.
“We believe Kathy has the experience to lead staff and ensure Melbourne continues to thrive as a dynamic city,” the Lord Mayor said.
Dr Kathy Alexander said she was delighted and honoured to be selected.
“I look forward to working with Lord Mayor and Councillors to continue to position Melbourne as a global capital city,” Dr Kathy Alexander said.
The search for a new Chief Executive began in November last year, following the departure of former Chief Executive David Pitchford after three and a half years in the role.
Assoc Prof. Kathy M. Alexander has qualifications in psychology and public health management and has more than 20 years experience in leading service organisations. Kathy’s work has been recognised with several national best practice awards and leadership positions on a number of boards. Kathy is a former South Australian Telstra Businesswoman of the Year and current Adjunct Associate Professor, School of Public Health, Faculty of Health Services, La Trobe University.
The three-year contract will begin on 10 April this year with remuneration of $390,000.
Acting Chief Executive Geoff Lawler will remain in the position until then.
Recruitment company Egon Zehnder International, under the guidance of independent probity auditor PSI Consulting, worked with a Council sub-committee to produce a short-list of four candidates for the consideration of Council.
