Relationship Declaration Register

The City of Melbourne's Relationship Declaration Register means couples of both mixed-sex and same-sex can formally declare their relationships.

To apply to register your relationship, you and your partner are required to read the guidelines, fill out an application form and visit the Town Hall to formally sign a certificate of declaration.

A certificate celebrating the committment will be provided on the day of the registration.

Visit Relationship Register questions and answers for more information.

While the register won’t confer legal rights in the way traditional marriage does, it may be used to demonstrate the existence of a de facto relationship in relation to the Property Laws Act 1958 , the Administration and Probate Act 1958 and other legislation involving domestic partnerships.

Victorian State Register

The State Government of Victoria launched the Victorian State Relationship Register in December 2008.

This register is administered by the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages and provides couples with conclusive proof of a domestic relationship and easier access to their rights under Victorian law.

If you choose to register your relationship with the State Government of Victoria, the status of your City of Melbourne registration will not be affected in any way.

More information about the Victorian Relationship Register may be found on the Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages at Department of Justice.
