Carshare

Carshare: the alternative to car ownership

Don't buy a car - share a car with your neighbours!

Carsharing has taken the world by storm over the last decade in Europe and North America operating in over 600 cities, and has been operating in the City of Melbourne since 2005.

Carsharing members have access to cars on demand for rent either by the hour or by the day and no parking hassles when you're done!

So how does it work?

  1. Work out which company best suits you
  2. Register and pay a joining fee
  3. Book a car by phone or internet
  4. Drive

Petrol, insurance, cleaning, maintenance and registration are all included in the hire charge. You need never pump petrol or clean a car again!

Carsharing can save you money

If you drive less than 15,000km a year you will probably find carsharing will save money.

This means that car sharing is an ideal choice for people living or working in inner city locations which have access to other modes of transport such as walking, cycling, trams and buses. It is also perfect for people who don't need a car everyday or want to get rid of a second car.

Visit RACV to calculate what it costs you to own a private car. Car sharing is good for the environment and the community
Every carshare takes 7-10 cars off the road, and car usage of individuals is reduced by up to 50 per cent.

Is there a carshare near you?

There are now over thirty active Carshare pods on City of Melbourne roads with coverage across:

  • Carlton
  • North Melbourne
  • West Melbourne
  • Southbank
  • the CBD
  • Docklands
  • South Yarra
  • East Melbourne
  • Kensington

What is the City of Melbourne doing?

The City of Melbourne works with carshare operators to deliver services in all of Council's suburbs. Recommendations coming out of the Carlton Parking and Access Strategy initiated carsharing facilities in the municipality, and as a result more and more pods are being established every year.

The City of Melbourne provides support for carshare operators through the Small Business Development Program as well as providing on-street car spaces across the municipality.

How do I join up or find out more?

There are three carsharing operators in the City of Melbourne: Flexicar, GoGet and Charter Drive. In order to work out which company best suits you, you will need to compare price structures, locations and service provision.
