What's on City of Melbourne

Environmental Local Law checklist

The City of Melbourne’s Environment Local Law sets out standards in environmental management business. The law is applicable to all business owners and occupiers within the City of Melbourne. This checklist is provided to help you understand your business’s environmental management responsibilities.

Storage of bins and other containers

  • My waste and recycling bins are stored on the premises and only placed on the street before collection times.
  • Empty milk crates, bread crates, beer barrels and any other containers are stored on the premises and only placed on the street before collection times.
  • Cardboard, paper, crates and any other containers are stacked neatly and securely when awaiting collection.
  • My waste and recycling bins are kept in good condition and are not overflowing.

Waste and recycling

  • Liquid wastes and hazardous wastes are not disposed of in the normal waste bins or down stormwater drains.
  • Recyclable materials are separated from the waste stream.
  • Every effort is made to reduce the volume of waste produced from my business.

Limiting any negative impact of my business operations

  • The area immediately adjacent to the premises I manage or own is kept clean and hygienic.
  • Steps have been taken to ensure cigarette butts are not littered outside the building I manage or own.
  • Steps have been taken to ensure noise and emissions from my business or contracted services do not adversely affect the amenity of adjoining areas.

Managing discharge to stormwater

  • Waste material is not poured, emptied, swept, thrown or discharged onto a road or into a stormwater drain.
  • I can limit pollution of waterways by:
    • not disposing of sweepings in the gutter
    • avoiding hosing down footpaths or other surfaces – apart from being a waste of water, the wash water may be polluted with contaminants
    • connecting air conditioning units to sewer rather than discharging into the street or onto the footpath
    • identifying the locations of stormwater inlet pits and educating staff that drains must not be used to dispose of waste.
  • The stormwater drainage connection from my property is inspected regularly and kept free from blockages.

Managing air quality

  • Waste material is not incinerated or burned in the open on my premises nor do I cause it to happen elsewhere.
  • The inspection and maintenance of my mechanical ventilation systems and gas equipment complies with Australian Standards.
