Promotional activity includes any concept that promotes a product or service but does not include selling the product, service or any associated merchandise. Giveaways of products and/ or merchandise are acceptable.
List of promotional sites
The City of Melbourne offers businesses access to various promotional sites located throughout the central city. The sites have been allocated specifically for the promotion of new products to consumers as roaming is not permitted. The sites are located at:
- outside your own business
- 209–11 Bourke Street East
- Bourke Street Mall in front of Adidas (community not-for-profit organisation only)
- Queensbridge Square
- Southbank Spillway
- City Square (community not-for-profit organisation only)
- outside Flinders Street Station
- outside Southern Cross Station (no infrastructure permitted due to the size of this site)
- outside Melbourne Central Station
- outside Parliament Station
- Piazza Italia – Carlton
- New Quay Promenande (adjacent to silence sculpture)
- Waterfront City Promenade (adjacent to Boatmans landing)
- Yarra's Edge (River Esplanade adjacent to Webb Bridge)
- Harbour Esplanade South (adjacent to Wharf 8)
- Harbour Esplanade North (adjacent to Wharf 15).
Initial promotions criteria:
- Products must be a sample size – products that are available for retail sale are not sample size.
- All products must have ‘DO NOT LITTER’ or something similar printed somewhere on them.
- Products in glass are not permitted.
- Handbill distribution is not a promotional or sampling activity – please refer to Handbills for guidelines and to apply for a permit.
- When sampling food or drink ‘Notification to Operate a Temporary Food Premises’ will also need to be supplied to Health Services.
- Promotions must remain within the promotion site, roaming is not permitted.
- Other guidelines/ permits may apply dependent upon your application.
Promotions fees
Fees are charged when using Melbourne's public spaces for promotions. Please note GST does not apply.
- 4 hours – $1,500 per site, per booking
- 4 hours plus – $1700 per site, per booking
Once you have selected your promotion site(s), reviewed the above criteria and are satisfied with the terms and conditions, complete your Promotional activity Permit application form online.
