What's on City of Melbourne

Tourism sector overview

Tourism is a major contributor to Melbourne’s economy, and to national and international recognition of Melbourne as a great place to visit, live, work, invest, study and stage events.

Tourism supports the local economy, provides employment, contributes to the city’s cultural vibrancy and has a positive impact on residents and businesses.

In 2008, a combination of international and domestic visitors spent $9.7 billion in the City of Melbourne. The City of Melbourne invests in visitor infrastructure and tourism services to make Melbourne accessible and easy to navigate, and to provide information, signage and visitor services to meet tourists’ needs.

In addition to the delivery of visitor services, the Tourism Melbourne branch is responsible for developing the City of Melbourne’s tourism policy and strategy. The branch works with the industry and trade to develop Melbourne as a destination of choice for business events, international students and leisure travel.

The industry is made up of businesses from at least 16 traditional industry sectors such as attractions, touring, retail and dining. It is characterised by many small- to medium-sized enterprises that often do not see themselves as part of the tourism industry.

The City of Melbourne provides a range of visitor information services to ensure tourists experience everything Melbourne has to offer. To find out more, see:
