All Victorian shopping centres are required by law to be smoke-free.
The City of Melbourne carries out regular compliance checks to ensure shopping centres are meeting their responsibilities.
This is part of the law that smoking is prohibited in all enclosed workplaces for all employed and volunteer staff.
An enclosed workplace means an area or room that is substantially enclosed by a roof and walls, regardless of whether these are permanent or temporary, open or closed.
There are exemptions to this law, including vehicles, sole occupancy workplaces and residential premises.
Employers may need to find alternative arrangements for employees who smoke, such as providing a designated outdoor smoking area.
