Hospitality employed around 30,000 people in the City of Melbourne in the 2009-10 financial year, according the new Melbourne Hospitality Strategy Report 2011.
The report highlights the many achievements of the hospitality sector, including an annual growth rate of 7.8 per cent in the number of cafes, restaurants and accommodation businesses.
Guiding a range of initiatives to support the development of the hospitality industry through collaboration, recognition, positioning, services and sustainability, the Melbourne Hospitality Strategy 2008-2012 recognises the importance and value of the sector.
The report covers the themes of hospitality as laid out in the Melbourne Hospitality Strategy 2008–2012:
- collaboration
- recognition
- positioning
- services
- sustainability.
A chapter in the report is dedicated to each theme.
The report tracks progress in achieving the objectives of the strategy during the past year – specifically major hospitality trends and challenges and marketing initiatives.
Even if your business isn’t in the hospitality sector, it’s worth finding out what’s happening in the world of city hospitality – the hospitality sector is at the heart of Melbourne’s social and cultural appeal.
The report provides an overview of the Hospitality Toolkit, the highly successful Melbourne Food and Wine Festival held in March, specific Docklands promotional activities and other City of Melbourne targeted marketing activities.
Recent visitor survey results are included along with the results of a precincts perception study undertaken on behalf of the City of Melbourne in early 2011. The precincts perception study reveals who visits which precincts and why.
The latest hospitality recipients of Small Business Grants and also of the Lord Mayor’s Commendations are presented and hospitality businesses that are championing sustainability are showcased.
