What's on City of Melbourne

Higher education sector overview

Melbourne is considered the leading city for superior quality in tertiary institutions not only in Australia, but also in the international arena.

Melbourne has a number of universities that offer exceptional undergraduate and postgraduate degrees / diplomas. Along with universities there are a number of technical and further education (TAFE) institutions as well as independently recognised institutions that offer similar courses.

Victoria is home to nine tertiary institutions, predominantly located in the Melbourne metropolitan area. Several of the larger institutions have campuses in rural areas.

The Victorian higher education institutions with campuses in the City of Melbourne are:

  • Australian Catholic University
  • Deakin University
  • La Trobe University
  • Monash University
  • RMIT University
  • Swinburne University of Technology
  • University of Melbourne
  • Victoria University.

The vice chancellors of these universities joined together with the City of Melbourne to form the Office of Knowledge Capital. This organisation had the mission to ‘collaborate to develop and promote Melbourne as Australia’s Knowledge Capital’.

There are also a number of interstate universities with a Melbourne presence along with several private colleges and institutions providing services to primarily overseas students.

International students

One of the world’s most liveable cities, the City of Melbourne boasts a fantastic support structure for international students. Centralised public transport, the low cost of living and ample student accommodation located within the city and the surrounding metropolitan area are just a few of the advantages to studying in Melbourne.

A larger number of international students attend universities in Melbourne than in any other city in Australia. This recognises Melbourne's role as a centre of excellence. Of these international students, the greatest majority study disciplines related to financial services.
