What's on City of Melbourne

Message from the City of Melbourne

Social Enterprise and Microbusiness Strategy

The City of Melbourne hosts a diverse range of businesses, from innovative small enterprises to major multinational corporations. More than 15,000 establishments employ more than 300,000 people in the municipality.

The City of Melbourne is keen to encourage opportunities for economic prosperity for all, and to create a business landscape that is vital, inclusive and accessible.

Within this varied landscape, social enterprises and micro businesses have the potential to provide employment and self-employment opportunities for people who may have been excluded from traditional employment.

To facilitate the development of this emerging sector, the City of Melbourne has formulated a Social Enterprise Strategy. Initiatives of the strategy include a pilot grants and support program enabling eligible social enterprises and micro businesses to apply for grants of up to $25,000. Council will also consider and identify appropriate opportunities to purchase more goods and services from social enterprises and micro businesses.

The City of Melbourne hopes that, in a modest way, this strategy will open up business and employment opportunities, and contribute to building a diverse and entrepreneurial business environment.
