Whether you are organising a public event or a small corporate launch, the City of Melbourne has a suitable location.
The City of Melbourne can provide function rooms, seminar rooms, gallery space and has many beautiful parks and gardens. In addition, the city has a spectacular Convention and Exhibition Centre for large-scale conferences.
See detailed information on facilities the city has available.
Event in public spaces
If your event occurs in any of Melbourne’s public spaces you need to get an event permit. This ensures public safety and amenity in Melbourne’s public spaces and assists in the sustainable management of our parks and gardens.
A huge variety of events can be held in Melbourne's open spaces, including:
- festival or campaign launches
- outside broadcasts (radio or television)
- art installations
- fun runs
- live music and theatre events
- cycling and other sports events.
Event organisers may also be required to submit an event plan in addition to an event permit application.
To assist event organisers create a plan, the City of Melbourne provides the Melbourne Event Planning Guide.
Next steps
Depending on the size and requirements of your event sufficient notice is required in order to process your application. This will ensure all requirements are able to be addressed to deliver a safe and successful event.
City of Melbourne reserves the right to decline an application if insufficient notice is provided. A good guide is to allow 1-2 weeks notice for any small activities. Notice for large events will require 6-12 months, again depending on size. Please discuss this with the Events Melbourne team on 9658 8008.
