What's on City of Melbourne

Green hotels

How can your city hotel cut waste and reduce water and energy consumption? The City of Melbourne’s Savings in the City pilot program resulted in significant savings for the 30 hotels and serviced apartments, large and small, that participated.

  • Waste figures show that hotels can save on average 4.8 litres per guest per night, or 2,410 tonnes annually – equivalent to 401 less garbage trucks dumping to landfill. The total saving for two years, across the 30 hotels, has been 628 truckloads of waste.
  • Your hotel could see an average reduction in water use of 15.3 litres per guest per night, equivalent to 25.4 Olympic swimming pools. Over two years, hotels have saved the equivalent of 45 Olympic swimming pools.
  • Total energy saved by the 30 hotels over the pilot program equated to 24,769 tonnes of greenhouse gas or 2,890 households – the population of East Melbourne.
