What's on City of Melbourne

Good access is good business

Did you know that you might be missing dozens of potential customers if your premises are not accessible for all?  In addition, the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 requires that all public premises are accessible to people with  disabilities (about 20 per cent of Victorians). That means your business is obliged to ensure ease of access for people of all abilities.

The City of Melbourne's 'Good Access is Good Business' program supports city businesses to meet the legal and community expectations that all people should have fair access to goods, services and opportunities.

About the program

Initial support material for business owners, managers and employees consists of:

The Good Access Handbook and the Good Access Customer Service Card are available at Good Access is Good Business seminars (see below for details). Additional copies can be obtained from the City of Melbourne on (03) 9658 9658.

Self-assessment checklists

Businesses can also conduct a self-assessment through the following access checklists that outline key access requirements. Individual checklists have been developed for:

  • eateries
  • retail outlets
  • bank, financial and legal sector businesses
  • recreational and cultural venues
  • late-night entertainment venues
  • tourism sector and public transport
  • educational institutions
  • hotels.
