Request permission
A written letter is required to get permission to modify a footpath, road or kerb and channel.
Your request must include the following information:
- the property address and a location plan
- a description of the works to be undertaken
- details of the design (refer to the Engineering Services Design and Drafting Guidelines for further information)
- start and completion dates for work
- estimated cost of construction of public realm works (e.g. footpath, kerb, channel and roads).
It must include your name or your contractor’s name, address, email and business hours phone number.
Submit your request
Your letter should be addressed to the Manager Infrastructure.
Submit it by email to enquiries@melbourne.vic.gov.au
After you submit your request
If your request is approved, we will send you a letter which outlines our construction requirements. This may include relevant engineering standard drawings and design standards for you to follow.
We will tell you if you need to get approval from other stakeholders.
Once you have permission, you must get consent for works (road works).
Fees
When plans are submitted for approval of public realm works, the developer must provide an estimated cost for construction. We will provide confirmation of all fees when assessing construction plans and invoice the developer for fees (please refer to section C.6.2.13 of the Design and Construction Standards).
Fees are determined as follows:
- Review of engineering plans – payment of 0.75 per cent of the estimated construction cost for City of Melbourne approval of public realm works checking of plans.
- Supervision of works – payment of 2.5 per cent of the estimated construction cost for municipal construction surveillance.
You will also need to pay a fee when you get consent for works (road works).
