Erect a temporary structure for a public event

If you are planning to erect a temporary structure for a public event, you may need a permit. This is a temporary siting approval permit.

Whether you need a permit or not, it’s your responsibility to ensure temporary structures are safe.

You may need to follow other rules and regulations. To find out more, read the supplementary information guide below.

                    Did you know?
You must have a current occupancy permit for your prescribed temporary structures before making an application for a place of public entertainment. These are arranged through the Victorian Building Authority.

What you need this permit for

You need a permit for the following temporary structures:

                    • a stage or platform of more than 150 m2
                    • a tent, marquee or booth with a floor area greater than 100 m2
                    • a seating stand that accommodates more than 20 people
                    • a prefabricated building of more than 100 m2

                    Smaller and inflatable structures

If your temporary structure is smaller than those listed, you don’t need a permit.

You don’t need a permit for inflatable structures of less than 100 m2.

                    When you should apply
