                    Climate Change Mitigation Strategy

City of Melbourne is proud to be part of a local and international movement of cities that will act to reduce emissions and to address climate change impacts.

We are already investing in renewable energy, urban forests, green buildings, waste innovation and in better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. Through such creative initiatives, we can deliver better health for our community together with economic, social and environmental benefits.

We are doing this because we want our city to remain a great place to live, work and visit, but climate change is threatening that.

As Melbourne feels the effects of climate change it threatens the liveability of our city through heatwaves, flooding, drought and poor air quality.

In 2018, City of Melbourne consulted with climate change experts and the community to develop a Climate Change Mitigation Strategy to 2050. The strategy is a major commitment to action that aims to reduce the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the municipality.

The strategy aligns to the Paris Climate Agreement and the international effort to stay below a 1.5°C rise in global average temperatures. It describes the actions we can take together to address the causes of climate change and avoid the worst impacts of global temperature rises.

Since releasing the Strategy Council has also declared a climate and biodiversity emergency, recognising that even more urgent action is required. This means we must now accelerate actions set out in the Climate Change Mitigation Strategy.

One of the key outcomes of the Declaration is an accelerated pathway to zero emissions by 2040 for the municipality. We will do this through a number of prioritised actions. One of the most important factors influencing whether we reach this target is action from the State and Federal governments, and so we will also be asking them to do more.

Since the Climate Change Mitigation Strategy was prepared, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates stronger emissions reduction pathways are required; this is one of the key reasons for our amended target of 2040 for zero emissions for the municipality.
