City of Melbourne properties provide a broad range of services for the community in accordance with the
Local Government Act 2020. Our property portfolio currently comprises over 500 leased and licensed facilities with a total asset value of $2.91 billion, including $209.6 million of assets held for investment purposes (as at 30 June 2022). The majority of properties are owned by City of Melbourne, however some are held under third party lease agreements and others are located on Crown land and managed by City of Melbourne.
Our properties support the delivery of a range of city and community services, such as libraries, recreation facilities, parks and open spaces.
The properties may be:
direct service delivery by City of Melbourne
the delivery of community, recreational based services by not for profit and community organisations
used for income generation
used to bring benefits to the wider community.
The demand for facilities by community groups in the municipality is always increasing and our property portfolio is managed to maximise usage for active programs and services that benefit the community in line with the
Council Plan 2021–25.
To assist groups who provide community, recreational, cultural and education opportunities to the community, we lease land and/or buildings and subsidise the rent payable. We also assist with the maintenance and day-to-day costs associated with the community groups’ occupation of these facilities.
In accordance with
section 115 of the
Local Government Act 2020 and the Community Engagement Policy,
we are committed to being transparent and accountable by providing information about current leases and how much rent is paid, as well as proposed leases.
