Chroma Cut

A series of school holiday workshops that culminated in the creation of a Public Art piece to be displayed on Signal’s windows, and illuminated after dark.

Using different techniques of applying colourful vinyl paint as well as playing with stickers using pattern and repetition, the process was large scale and prone to paint splattering.

Young participants worked with artists Rowena Martinich and Rachel O'Connor to create a giant luminous vinyl paint and sticker installation visible from 21July to 25 August, 2010.

Envelope: Sustainability and Design

A two day intensive workshop run as part of the State of Design Festival. Working with Printmaker Nadia Maini-Craig and Fashion Designer Anthea van, participants worked with a uniquely designed recycled material called Envelope.

The focus of the workshop was on building community practice in fashion within the principles of sustainable design and transferring skills of printmaking, stitching and design thinking. The outcome was a completed one of a kind garment which participants could take home with them.

Signal Art Ensemble

After the success of the ArtPlay Art ensemble, Gillian Howell teamed musicians from the Australian Art Orchestra with young Victorian musicians in a series of collaborative workshops spanning over a year.

Exploring the elements of composing and improvising, these workshops culminated in live performances which were performed as part of the Melbourne International Jazz festival.
