What's on City of Melbourne

The Melbourne Car Parks Accreditation Scheme

The City of Melbourne has established a car park accreditation scheme to raise the standard of safety in car parks. The scheme also recognises and rewards responsible practice and improvements to operational management, promoting safety and security of car parks and their patrons.

The Melbourne Car Park Accreditation Scheme is a joint initiative of the City of Melbourne and Victoria Police developed in consultation with car park operators. It is one of a range of community safety and wellbeing initiatives currently being implemented by the City of Melbourne to promote safe transport to and from the city.

How does the accreditation work?

The Melbourne Car Park Accreditation Scheme requires a demonstrated commitment to the safety and security of customers and their property through the maintenance of specific safety standards and the enhancement of operations through value added services, including:

• security
• physical amenity
• signage
• entry/exit
• ramps and internal circulation
• pedestrian movement
• parking for people with disabilities
• staff service
• other facilities

Only car parks which clearly demonstrate a commitment to the safety and security of customers and their property are accredited.

Car parks are assessed by an independent team using specific criteria and commitment to security and safety is rated on a star basis:

*****  Superior safety and security conditions supported by value added services
**** Very good to excellent safety and security conditions
*** Satisfactory safety and security conditions
** Needs improvement
* Needs significant improvement

Accreditation is undertaken every three years to recognise continuous improvement and maintenance of the safety standards achieved.

The Melbourne Car Park Operators Forum

Car park operators meet quarterly to discuss issues pertinent to safety and security in Melbourne's car parks. Representatives at the meetings include Victoria Police, City of Melbourne and car park operators.

The forum also monitors the progress and viability of the Melbourne Car Park Accreditation Scheme. If you manage a car park in the Melbourne municipality and would like to become a member of the forum please contact City of Melbourne on (03) 9658 9658.
