What's on City of Melbourne

Parking rules

Parking rules exist to improve traffic flow.

Clearways

Clearways improve traffic flow at the busiest times of the day. You cannot stop your car between clearway signs during the times specified on the sign.

Parking restrictions

Parking restrictions differ across the whole municipality, including the central city. Please remember to always check the parking signs.

For full details on parking rules, please refer to the relevant road rules or regulation in its entirety.

For more information visit VicRoads or Information Victoria

Children's crossings

Stopping your vehicle too close to a children's crossing may mean that a child entering the crossing can’t see or be seen by an approaching car.

When a children's crossing is in operation (ie. when the flags are displayed), you must not stop:

  • within 20 metres before the crossing
  • within 10 metres after the crossing

This means that stopping momentarily to let a child out or pick a child up is an offence.

These restrictions do not apply when flags are not displayed and the crossing is unattended.

However, if there is also a No Stopping sign at the approach to the crossing, you must obey it at all times.

Intersections

Parking your vehicle too close to an intersection can endanger pedestrians and other drivers by blocking their view of the traffic, and by restricting other drivers’ turning space.

A driver must not stop on a road within 20 metres of the nearest point of an intersecting road at an intersection with traffic lights.

A driver must not stop on a road within 10 metres from the nearest point of an intersecting road at an intersection without traffic lights.

Loading zones

You can only stop in a Loading Zone if you are driving a vehicle that is dropping off or picking up goods or people, and is:

  • a truck with a GVM (Gross Vehicular Mass) over 4.5 tonnes
  • a bus or taxi cab if dropping off or picking up passengers
  • a courier or delivery vehicle permanently marked in the way specified by the Regulations (ask the Council or Vic Roads)
  • a G classified goods van

Vehicles must comply with time limits set on signs, or a maximum of 30 minutes if there is no time on the sign.

No Stopping and No Parking

No Stopping means no stopping at all – even if you are only stopping to let someone out of the car, and regardless of whether you leave the engine running and stay in the car.

You must not stop in a No Parking area unless dropping off or picking up passengers or goods. You must not leave the car and not take longer than two minutes or the time limit on the sign (unless stated otherwise).

Parking correctly

When parking in a two-way road you must park on the left-hand side. You must get the left wheels of the car as close to the kerb as you can and leave at least a metre between you and the cars in front and behind.

You must park within the marked lines of the parking bay, and you must not park partly in and partly out of parking areas. You can be given a ticket for breaking any of these rules.

Stopping across driveways

You must not stop across your own or another person’s driveway, or so close to the driveway that you stop a vehicle from driving in or out.

It is an offence to stop on any nature strip or median strip, unless parking signs allow it.

Tow-away zones

If a Clearway is classified as a tow-away zone, the police or Council can have your car towed away by an authorised operator, as well as fining you.

You may have to pay a release fee to get your car back. Council will not accept responsibility for the inconvenience to you or for any damage to your car during towing.

Report an illegally parked vehicle

If you have a non-urgent parking issue, you can request parking officer attendance online and we will assist as soon as possible.
