In July 2011, licence plate recognition (LPR) technology was introduced to two City of Melbourne vehicles to operate mainly in suburban areas of the municipality.
However, in December 2011 it was removed from service since it did not deliver on expectations.
To ensure continued service, City of Melbourne parking officers have been deployed in the areas formerly covered by licence plate recognition.
City of Melbourne is currently considering new options for a mobile solution to parking enforcement.
