English language learning at Melbourne Library Service

Melbourne Library Service has one of the largest collections of adult English as a Second Language (ESL) and English literacy material in Australia, containing a wide variety of resources to assist in learning to speak, listen, read, and write in the English language. 

The ESL collections (at City and North Melbourne Libraries) contain:

  • Easy readers: Fiction and biographies of famous people, with different levels of difficulty.
  • Easy reading kits: Books with accompanying CDs or cassette tapes.
  • Non-fiction: Books to improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as well as other topics.
  • IELTS material: Practice tests and tips for the General and Academic IELTS exams. Download a PDF pathfinder to IELTS resources.
  • OET resources: Course material and general medical resources to help prepare for the Occupational English Test for medical professionals.  
  • English for Work resources: Become familiar with vocabulary specific to your profession. Includes business, accounting and finance, marketing, technology, hospitality and your rights at work. 
  • Electronic resources: Three easy-to use programs which can be accessed free online from anywhere to help improve your English skills. 
  • Computer programs: Special software available only in the Computer Lab. See a full list of software available.
  • Dictionaries: English language and grammar dictionaries - some for use only within the library, and some to take home.

You may borrow five items from the main ENG Collection at one time for three weeks, and three IELTS items at one time for one week.

There are three fixed CD/cassette players on the Mezzanine floor of City Library which you can use with headphones. Headphones are available at the Circulation desk.

Electronic resources for English language learning

These programs are free for all members of Melbourne Library Service. To access these programs you will need to enter your library card number at the prompt.

The first time you use these programs, you need to enter your name and email address, and choose a password so you can track your progress. 

Tense Buster

Improve your grammar. Covers all grammar areas and includes practice exercises for beginner, intermediate and advanced students of English.  Visit Tense Buster.

 

 

Active Reading

Help with reading and vocabulary skills. It is based around a variety of texts including articles, broadcasts, quizzes, letters, recipes, stories, newsletters and advertisements. It is suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced students.   Visit Active Reading.

 

Study Skills Success

Great for IELTS preparation! For students in upper secondary and higher education who wish to improve their academic study skills. It can also help you to prepare for IELTS and TOEFL. Each unit includes presentation and practice activities. Visit Study Skills Success.

OET (Occupational English Test) resources

The Occupational English Test is a language test for health professionals who received their qualification overseas. City Library contains some course material for people undertaking an OET preparation course, as well as some general medical and health-related books.
