Library self service

Melbourne Library Service has moved to full self service for borrowing. Our new self service kiosks will allow you to borrow, renew and even pay library fines. To borrow you will need to remember your library card and keep your fines under $10.

PIN for accessing your library membership, renewals and reservations

A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a four digit number that provides an extra level of security when using your library card. The default PIN is the last four digits of your telephone number. If you do not have a phone number the default is your year of birth. If you would prefer to specify a different PIN or do not have a telephone number, log in to the member area to update your PIN details.

Alias

When joining the Melbourne Library Service you may designate an alias. This can be used instead of your barcode for renewals and other online operations through the library catalogue. You can change your alias online at any time via Account Management.

Renewals

You can renew items online, in person or by phone. All items may be renewed twice provided someone else has not reserved them. The due date is the last day on which you can renew your loans without incurring fines. Renewals are calculated for the relevant loan period from the date the renewal is made.

For phone or website renewals please have your library card barcode number or alias handy. For website renewals you will also need your PIN. To renew, go to the member area, log in to your account and choose the 'Items on loan' link.

Returning items

All materials may be returned to any branch of the Melbourne Library Service. After hours chutes are provided at each library.

Overdue fees

Fines are 30 cents per day per item. You can avoid fines by returning or renewing your items by the due date. Overdue items can be renewed provided that they are not reserved by another borrower or have not exceeded the maximum of 2 renewals. Please note that you are not able to borrow if you owe fines of more than $10.

Reservations

Our catalogue lists items held at Melbourne Library Service. Should you wish to borrow a title that is out on loan or at another library you can request the item by placing a reservation via the catalogue in the library, on our website or by asking staff at the library desk.

You may have up to 20 items on reserve at any one time. Please note items with a status of lost, missing or claims returned cannot be reserved.
