The City Library provides a vibrant cultural hub for the local Melbourne community.
Within the library, users can view and experience a range of art, including exhibitions in the level-one Gallery, hanging art in the Degraves Reading Room, moving-image works in the projections program, and smaller works in the display niches dotted around the library.
In addition to supporting our traditional art spaces, we welcome enquiries from the community regarding unusual installations, ephemeral performances and other creative projects.
The Melbourne Library Service applies the guidelines outlined in the City of Melbourne Arts Strategy to all applications for use of the Gallery and art spaces at City Library, and to any exhibitions that are held in a Melbourne Library Service facility. Please ensure that you are familiar with the City of Melbourne Arts Strategy 2010–13 before applying to exhibit.

Projections @ City Library
The Melbourne Library Service is always on the lookout for digital image content to screen as part of its public projections program, which showcases quality works that embrace the vibrancy of Melbourne’s artistic community. Currently the City Library has two outlets available for moving-image works: a projection in the foyer of the building, and a plasma screen on the ground floor.
What we are looking for
City Library is looking for work which will be visually stimulating without the need for a soundtrack — such as abstract imagery and photographic slideshows — while conforming to classification restrictions (i.e. the material must be suitable for a public space, or lighter than G rated).
Each successful submission is played on a constant loop for a specified duration of up to one month, and screening times are advertised on our website.
Submissions must be presented via DVD copies in PAL format, or Powerpoint slideshow, of no less than 10 minutes duration, preferably 20 minutes. Artists are more than welcome to assemble their own compilation with other contributing artists if their body of work does not meet this requirement.
Please note: All DVDs must be set to loop start to finish, to start again.
To apply for the projections program please send a bio and a synopsis of the work to: email@example.com
Niches & display cabinets @ City Library
The City Library has a variety of niches and display cabinets dotted around the library that are perfect for small sculptural works, jewellery exhibitions, craft works, and other creative installations. The Melbourne Library Service is looking for interested artists to fill some, or all, of the various display spaces at various times throughout the year.
Art niches: 6 x 360mm deep x 570mm high x 380mm wide.
Entrance niches: 3 x 890mm long x 260mm deep x 350mm high.
Please email us for a complete list of spaces and dimensions, and to apply please send a bio, an image and a synopsis of the work to: firstname.lastname@example.org
