Animal management services

The City of Melbourne is currently preparing its 2012 – 2015 Domestic Animal Management Plan.

To ensure we’re meeting the needs of all community members within the municipality, you’re encouraged to provide your feedback on the 2012 – 2015 Domestic Animal Management Plan Discussion Paper.

To ensure submitting your feedback is easy, a questionnaire can be downloaded and returned via post, in person or email.

Pet ownership education

The City of Melbourne’s education campaign will continue to increase the level of responsible pet ownership in the community through access to information and advice for pet owners and the general public.

The Domestic Animal Management Plan 2008 – 2011 guides Council's decision making in relation to services and programs for domestic animals within the municipality. Download a copy of the current plan:

The Lost Dogs’ Home

The City of Melbourne has a contractual agreement with The Lost Dogs’ Home to provide a range of animal management services, together with the City of Melbourne Park Ranges, including:

  • registering cats and dogs 
  • providing pound facilities for cats and dogs 
  • providing shelter facilities for animals that have been injured, abandoned or relinquished  
  • responding to requests from the public for the collection of injured or stray animals 
  • regularly patrolling specified areas to encourage compliance with leashing requirements and locating and collecting stray animals 
  • providing education and information on pet selection, care and the legislative obligations of owners 
  • investigating complaints.

The Department of Primary Industries has introduced a code of practice for the private keeping of dogs and cats. The codes have been developed to provide guidance for pet owners to safeguard the welfare of both cats and dogs, and include information on nutrition, health, housing, transport, training, socialisation and exercise.
