What's on City of Melbourne

Lost and found animals

Where do lost pets go?

All animals found in the municipality will be taken to the City of Melbourne pound at The Lost Dogs' Home for eight days.

If you find a cat or dog, call the City of Melbourne. We will arrange for an Animal Management Officer to collect the animal and take it to the City of Melbourne pound, where it will be scanned for a micro-chip and linked with any missing animals records.

By law you must deliver an animal you have found to the local council you found it in.

If your animal has its council registration tag and microchip, you can be assured you will be contacted if you animal is found.

If your pet is untagged and missing, you will be required to visit the City of Melbourne pound to check for your animal.

Did you know

Approximately 50,000 cats are picked up in Victoria annually and 35,000 of these have to enthunised mainly due to poor health.

Research shows a major contributing factor to this problem is people feeding unowned cats because they feel sorry for them. This confuses the cat and changes it's feeding habits. This isn’t the answer.  For further information visit www.whosforcats.com.au.
