The City of Melbourne's commitment to reducing potable water consumption complements its targets for greenhouse gas reductions across the municipality. Zero Net Emissions by 2020 Update 2008 sets the ambitious target of carbon neutrality by 2020.
Because of this, the City of Melbourne recommends all water reuse or harvesting projects to be climate neutral. The City of Melbourne has developed the 'Climate Neutral Water Saving Schemes' discussion paper, which promotes the use of water saving schemes that do not result in increased greenhouse gas emissions.
