What's on City of Melbourne

Documentation

Tom Carment, Documentation

In 2004, Tom Carment was commissioned to document the construction of CH2 – and those participating in its design and construction – through sketches, paintings and diary notes.

Tom is a very respected artist who, since 1974, has had numerous solo and group shows and has won many art prizes. He is also a writer whose essays and stories have been published nationally.

Over the two years of construction he visited the site for a week at a time, about every two months. His paintings, drawings and writing have captured the building from its earliest stages of excavation through to its completion.

Eighty of these pictures were framed and, along with Tom's storyboards about the construction, exhibited on the ground floor of CH2 in August and September of 2006. To coincide with this exhibition a 48-page catalogue containing Tom's stories and pictures of CH2 was published.

An archive of the remaining several hundred artworks has been established at the City of Melbourne Repository. Many of the works are now hanging on the walls of CH2.

CH2 is expected to attract international media interest and the reproduction of these images will form part of the information made available to audiences worldwide to promote the sustainable business practices.
