What's on City of Melbourne

Why a food policy?

The food policy engagement process has enabled us to discuss our municipality’s food system. It has led to an examination of how we, as an organisation, present food and promote healthy eating.

Food security is an emerging global issue as climate change and urbanisation create an impact on our food systems.  The City of Melbourne

food policy will represent our commitment to a healthy, sustainable, fair and prosperous food system.

Our vision is for a community where:

  • everyone has access to sufficient nutritious, safe, affordable and culturally appropriate food both now and in the future
  • the food we produce and consume improves our environment, regenerates our natural resource base and promotes a high standard of animal welfare
  • prosperous and resilient food producers and businesses across the city and the state support strong local and regional economies
  • we celebrate our diverse, multicultural food traditions and promote Melbourne as a city of great food

The City of Melbourne cannot bring about this change alone, but there are areas where we believe we can make an effective local contribution:

  • Building and strengthening partnerships
  • Leadership and advocacy
  • Education and community development
  • Regulation and infrastructure management
  • Research

What does a food policy mean to you?

We all have a role to play in creating a healthy, sustainable, fair and prosperous food system. This includes involvement from community, business, organisations and all levels of government. The City of Melbourne food policy will be for everyone who lives, works or visits the city.
