Melbourne is world-renowned for the quality of its food and its liveability and we want it to stay that way.
City of Melbourne has historically been proactive with public health food issues and has a strong focus and commitment to providing resources for the community’s food safety.
The City of Melbourne has responded to local food security issues by developing partnerships with community agencies that are keen to build capacity around food insecurity in their local area.
Healthy eating programs, including the Green Light Eat Right program, have forged a role for food policy development. The research and community consultations conducted to inform the food policy have provided a greater understanding of the food issues that shape peoples lives.
The City of Melbourne recognises the importance of food within the municipality aligning to Council Plan 2009–2013 under:
- Goal 1 – A city for people
- Goal 3 – Economic prosperity
- Goal 5 – An eco-city
