What's on City of Melbourne

Floods and storms

Storms can happen anywhere at anytime of the year and can be accompanied by torrential rain, strong winds, large hailstones and lightening.

Storms may result in flash flooding, un-roofed buildings, damaged trees and powerlines, and can pose a significant safety risk to people, animals, households and businesses.

You can prepare by:

  • Developing a home or business emergency plan
  • Assembling an emergency kit
  • Cleaning your gutters, downpipes and drains and ensuring they are in good order and not blocked
  • Trimming over hanging branches
  • Making sure your roof is in good repair
  • Tidying your yard and veranda to ensure unsecured items do not become potential missiles in high winds.

In an emergency

In a flood or storm emergency you can call Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) direct on 132 500 (24 hours per day) from anywhere in Victoria for emergency assistance. It is the same cost as a local call (outside Victoria and mobiles may be higher).

When you call 132 500 a trained call-taker will note the details and dispatch an SES unit to the incident.
