What's on City of Melbourne

Pedestrian safety

RedMan GreenMan

The City of Melbourne’s pedestrian safety campaign aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from pedestrian accidents.

Watch our See Red Man/Green Man campaign video which teaches why road rules matter.

Coordinated by the City of Melbourne and Victoria Police, the campaign promotes safe and responsible pedestrian behaviour.

The City of Melbourne has the highest incidence of pedestrian injuries in Victoria. Most of these accidents are due to the high numbers of both people and vehicles in CBD streets, with over 700,000 people visiting the city daily.

Every second day a person will be hit and injured by a car in the City of Melbourne municipality. From 1 January 2007 to 31 October 2007 there have been a total of 192 pedestrian collisions - five people were killed and 73 seriously injured.

Major problem areas in the city are the exits from train stations, specifically Flinders Street, Parliament, Melbourne Central and Spencer Street stations, as well as the area surrounding Melbourne University.

The pedestrian safety campaign encourages pedestrians to take responsibility for their own safety by using crossings, obeying road rules and being aware of all road users.

The campaign also highlights:

  • oncoming road and tram traffic are major causes of pedestrian injury and death
  • headphones and mobile phones cause distractions and can be a safety risk
  • highest number of accidents happen between 8am and 6pm
  • three pedestrian groups are particularly vulnerable: the young, the elderly and the intoxicated
  • over 30 per cent of pedestrians killed have a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level above .05

(Statistics sourced from TAC, VicRoads and the Victorian Police)

Some tips on how to keep safe:

  • Be alert - Look and Listen!
  • Headphones and mobile phones cause distractions – take extra care!
  • Cross at pedestrian crossings only
  • Start crossing only on a green pedestrian light. Remember: Red man = Do not cross; Green man = Cross with care; Red flashing man = Complete crossing but don’t start to cross
  • Obey the rules or risk an on-the-spot fine
  • As you get off the tram, look both ways for approaching traffic and trams
  • Road safety is your responsibility
