What do your rates pay for?

Your rates contribute to new and improved services, council works program for better roads and parklands and help support community and business activities in the City of Melbourne.

The 2010–11 council works program includes:

  • $10.7 million for road and footpath renewals.
  • $1.24 million for local road safety improvements, including new traffic lights at the intersection of Elgin and Drummond streets, Carlton and Oak Street, Parkville, near Poplar Road.
  • $362,000 for water saving design projects, including a stormwater capture and treatment facility which will collect stormwater from drains along Grey and Darling streets, East Melbourne, treat it and re-use it to irrigate Darling Reserve (instead of using mains water).
  • $1.1 million for bicycle projects, including new bicycle lane treatments in LaTrobe Street and William Street, new bicycle storage hoops in the city and upgrading bicycle lanes to new design standards that better separate bikes from cars.
  • $360,000 to improve street accessibility for people with disabilities.
