How to pay your rates

Rates notices are usually sent to ratepayers in July each year. For more information on payment dates and eligible concessions, visit:

Receive your rates notice via email

Enjoy the convenience of having your rates notice sent via email.

Register to receive your rates notice to your nominated email address by:

Once you register, complete the form on the website to request your rates notices be sent via email. Other notices, such as animal registration, will still be sent to your postal address.

It is important when registering to enter your full name and assessment number as it appears on your rate notice. For example John Andrew and Mary Citizen would be shown as J A Citizen and M Citizen.

The property assessment number is located on the top right hand corner of the rate notice. An example is 1234567.

Note: If you have multiple properties with the exact name and address (as shown on the rate notice) you only need to register once with one assessment number, the other properties will be automatically added to your account.

How to pay your rates

The City of Melbourne offers a range of payment options and methods.

Please note: fees for credit card payments apply.

The credit card fee is 0.33 per cent of the rates total, GST exempt. This is to recover the cost of merchant fees charged by financial institutions for credit card transactions.

Online

Go to Pay your rates online. You can pay by Visa or MasterCard.

By mail

Complete and detach the bottom portion of your rate notice and mail with your cheque to: City of Melbourne, PO Box 1839, Melbourne, 3001.

BPAY

Contact your participating bank, credit union or building society to arrange payment from your cheque or savings account. Please quote Biller Code: 79616 and the BPAY Reference Number on your rate notice.

BPAY View

Now receive, pay and store your bills in your online banking.

BPAY View sends your bills and statements straight to the same online bank you use to pay them. With convenient email, SMS or bank message reminders and secure online or mobile access, BPAY View makes it easy to pay on time, every time. And BPAY View is easy on the environment too.

Register to BPAY View in three easy steps:

  1. Log into your online banking account
  2. Look for the BPAY View or View Bills section
  3. Register your City of Melbourne rates by entering the Biller Code: 79616

Your full name and BPAY reference number as it appears on your rate notice. For example John Andrew and Mary Citizen would be shown as J A Citizen and M Citizen and the BPAY reference number as shown on your rate notice.

By direct debit

Payments by instalments can be made by direct debit. Contact the City of Melbourne on 03 9658 9658 for an authorisation form, or download a copy.

Please return your form to the Rates Department by one of the methods listed below.

By phone

Dial 1300 130 453. You can pay by Visa or MasterCard. You will need to quote the assessment number on your rate notice.

In person

You can pay in person at the cashier’s desk at the Melbourne Town Hall, 90-120 Swanston Street, Melbourne, between 7.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Post office

You can pay in person at any Australia Post outlet by producing your rate notice intact. Payments can be made by cash, cheque or EFTPOS.
