Going Nowhere is an international event of live art, conversation and performance. It connects audiences, artists, economists, environmentalists, scientists, designers and engineers across the world. This event honours the delight of going somewhere different, meeting new people, recalibrating your perceptions and feeling connected. Without anyone getting on a plane.
The Ambition
We know in our heart of hearts a low-carbon economy is as inevitable as running out of milk. Going Nowhere addresses the biggest part of our carbon footprint – air travel. Which is probably the hardest to give up (especially for Australians). So if we can re-imagine that connection we’re on the way to feeling good about what’s next.
And in the process of reimagining we’ll explore other ways of receiving, touring and creating art as an exchange, a franchise or a barter.
We’ll recycle ideas and histories and upcycle concepts. We’ll be talking about responsible mobility, exchange and copyright, grief and optimism. Going Nowhere hopes to contribute to redesigning the way we live, reimagining the consumption of travel for the aesthetics of exchange. And if the accrual of wealth is the accrual of carbon, then this is one event that can celebrate its moderate budget with its participants and audiences.
The Process
There’ll be vodka and broken promises. There’ll be laughter and new friends you might never meet:
- Four days of aesthetic elaborations and conceptual adventures involving performing, talking, thinking, witnessing, eating, bargaining, walking, gardening, cooking, following instructions, creating instructions, listening, uploading and downloading.
- Ten interlocutors – economists, environmentalists, scientists, designers, philosophers, geographers, historians, lawyers, politicians, Indigenous leaders and futurists, rigorously articulating, critiquing and analysing the value of the exchanges that are occurring and creating their own market of knowledge and functionality.
- A plethora of artists and YOU – helping to create new and imaginative connections across our precious planet.
Food Forest at the Meat Market
Patrick Jones (Artist as Family) is developing Food Forest, a permaculture garden at Arts House Meat Market, with the local arts community and residents. The garden will provide the food for a harvest supper on the final night of Going Nowhere.
