Transforming Australian cities
City of Melbourne has won an Australia Award for Urban Design for its research project Transforming Australian Cities.
The Melbourne study, jointly commissioned by the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Department of Transport, investigated the potential transformation of metropolitan Melbourne to meet the projected population of 5 million by 2029. The research includes Melbourne case studies and presents a well-researched argument for sustainable strategic residential and employment intensification along public transport corridors.

City of Melbourne's green building, Council House 2 (CH2), is an innovative building design with the potential to change the way Australia – and indeed the world – approaches ecologically sustainable design. It also represents a unique chance to not just set an example but to run a research program that will lead to a much greater understanding of sustainable design and its benefits.

CitySounds survey
CitySounds is a community-based survey developed by RMIT University Spatial Information Architectural Laboratory (SIAL) and the City of Melbourne. The aim of the survey was to investigate the awareness and perceptions that people have towards typical sounds heard in the CBD.

Value of Tourism 2007
In 2007, the City of Melbourne published the Value of Tourism report. The report estimates direct tourism expenditure in the City of Melbourne and discusses social benefits of tourism, and relationships between quality of visitor services and tourism performance.

Gambling 2005
While gambling is a recreational activity which most experience without harm, the City of Melbourne is concerned about problem gambling and its effect in the community. Problem gambling refers to a situation where a person’s gambling activity gives rise to harm to the individual player, and their family and may extend into the wider community.
