How recent is the CLUE data?

The latest Census of Land Use and Employment (CLUE) was conducted in 2008 and the municipality-wide information on this site reflects this census. Data for CLUE 2008 was collected between April and November of 2008. The previous CLUE was conducted in 2006, 2004, 2002, 2000 and 1997 and each five years prior to that. Electronic data is currently available for census years: 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.

How often is CLUE conducted?

Every commercial property will be surveyed at least once every two years with new buildings surveyed on completion.

When will the next CLUE information be released?

The next CLUE information (CLUE 2010) is being released progressively by small area (based on official suburbs) from April 2011 with municipality wide data to be released by mid 2012. CLUE 2010 is based on data collected between November 2009 and June 2011.

How is the data collected and what sort of information is collected?

A team of surveyors conducts a field survey which involves visiting every establishment in every building in the Census area (City of Melbourne municipality). Information is collected such as trading name, activity description, a space type code, number of employees, number of parking spaces, capacity measures, etc. See CLUE definitions (Research Method) for further information.

Can I obtain data for specific businesses or buildings?

Data on specific businesses or specific buildings is not made available for reasons of confidentiality. Confidentiality does not, however, extend to data that is public knowledge, such as trading names.

What can I do if the information I require is not in free reports?

If you can’t find the data you require in the list of free reports, you can submit a request for a customised report via email or telephone. Please refer to enquiries and customised requests for more information.

What type of information can I expect from a customised report?

Depending on the request, in most cases you would receive a table with all relevant data in Excel format. 

How is the cost of a customised report calculated? Will I receive a quote first?

The cost is calculated on an hourly basis. The rate is $220 per hour incl. GST. We will review your request upon receipt and advise you of the exact cost before the report is produced. Customised reports are only supplied following acceptance of our quote.

How is the data delivered?

You can choose to have the data e-mailed, faxed or mailed.

Can I have the data provided in map format?

No, although if you would like to map and analyse the information yourself, geospatial map layers in Esri shapefile format for CLUE small areas and blocks are available to download.

You’ll need to perform a spatial join to append CLUE data atributes to these map layers. Please refer to small area and block maps.

Can I view a sample of the CLUE report I wish to purchase?

Yes, there is an option to download or print sample reports free of charge. You can review these in Excel format electronically. Please refer to free reports.
