As part of the City of Melbourne’s Cultural Precinct Enhancement Program, the following works are planned for the city’s popular cultural precincts during 2011:
Greek precinct (Lonsdale Street, Melbourne)
Completed works:
- Installation of stylised 2.2m glass café screens for existing restaurants and cafes within the Greek precinct.
- Striking blue and white suspended (catenary) lighting across the Lonsdale and Russell streets intersection.
- Awnings enhancements for traders on Lonsdale Street.
To be completed in 2011–12:
- Heffernan Lane lighting upgrade to link Chinatown and the Greek precinct, expect to be finished by July.
Chinatown (Little Bourke Street, Melbourne)
Completed works:
- Refurbishment of two archways in Exhibition and Russell streets.
- Suspended (catenary) lighting with lanterns and spots along Little Bourke Street from Exhibition Street to Russell Street.
- Two decorative lighting pillars along Russell Street median strip, heralding the start of Chinatown.
- Tianjin Gardens entry poles — gateway feature at Spring and Little Bourke streets.
- Refurbishment of archways over Little Bourke Street, on Swanston and Russell streets.
- Suspended (catenary) lighting on Little Bourke Street, from Russell Street to Swanston Street.
To be completed in 2011–12:
- Heffernan Lane lighting upgrade to link Chinatown and the Greek precinct, expect to be finished by July.
Lygon Street cultural precinct (Carlton)
Completed works:
- Piazza Italia Stage and Argyle Square south gardens upgrade.
- Lighting markers at the corner of Elgin and Lygon streets and Queensberry and Lygon streets.
- La Mama Theatre forecourt and Del Monaco Lane enhancements. La Mama and the City of Melbourne are working together to finalise designs.
- Upgrade of Pelham Street as a link between Melbourne Museum and Piazza Italia, to be finished by July.

All precincts
The City of Melbourne plans to research the history of Melbourne’s three Cultural precincts. This research will be used to create a series of installations to tell the stories of the city’s cultural past. This is expected to be completed by March 2012.
