Melbourne Awards Sustainability Impact Assessment
The City of Melbourne has taken on the challenge to stabilise global climate change and has been active in the incorporation of best practice sustainability measures across City of Melbourne initiatives.
Council has developed a roadmap for the municipality and its commercial, industrial and residential inhabitants to achieve zero (net) greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. The strategy is known as the Zero Net Emissions by 2020 strategy and it is envisioned that the implementation of this strategy will end the City’s contribution to global warming within 20 years.
The Melbourne Awards recognise management of sustainability performance as a high priority and, in keeping with the principles of the Zero Net Emissions by 2020 strategy; the Melbourne Awards developed a carbon measurement and reduction strategy for the program. Over the last three years, the Melbourne Awards has been working with event partner, Net Balance Management to effectively measure and manage the environmental impacts caused by the event.
In 2012 we plan to assess the broader sustainability impacts of the Melbourne Awards by drawing on guidance contained in the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) final draft - Event Organisers Sector Supplement (EOSS). The Supplement is a version of the GRI G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines tailored for the Event Organisers sector.
