Budding filmmakers, young writers, artists and music enthusiasts will get the chance to learn new skills as part of Signal 37, a free summer creative arts program taking place from 15 to 28 January 2012.
An intensive program of workshops, exhibitions and performances, Signal 37 kicks off on Sunday 15 January and culminates in an event on January 28 with ten days of art, creativity and inspiration in between.
Run by the City of Melbourne, Signal is an arts studio dedicated to young people aged 13 to 20.
Participants can choose from a variety of workshops including sound design and VJ skills with artists Robin Fox and Tim Bright, street art mentoring with Blender Studios and Ghost Patrol or visual art portfolio development with Clare McCracken and RMIT.
For those wanting to add a bit of bling to their bike, Squeaky Wheel and BikeFest will be running a bike adornment workshop where participants can learn crafty ways to decorate their wheels and light up the roads with colour and movement.
Budding filmmakers can take part in a horror film workshop with Undead Melbourne, where they can learn about every aspect of the film making process from production to special effects and finding a location.
Express media will run a creative writing workshop where young people will conceptualise, design, write, edit and produce a special edition of Signal Express.
Councillor Jennifer Kanis, Chair of the People and Creative City (Future Melbourne) Portfolio, said Signal 37 is an opportunity for young people to collaborate and connect with creative professionals.
“This summer 100 young people from diverse backgrounds will get the chance to gain valuable experience by working with professional artists, developing skills across a wide range of art forms and strengthening social networks.”
“Participants don’t have to have any prior experience and the program is completely free. Best of all, select programs give recognition for prior learning for those participants who want to further their studies in their area of interest” Councillor Kanis said.
Signal 37 is a partnership with City of Melbourne, RMIT, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC), and the Melbourne Bike Festival.
Signal is right in the heart of the city: behind Flinders Street Station on Northbank, in the Les Erdi Plaza, at the northern end of Sandridge Bridge, and at the top of Banana Alley.
