What's on City of Melbourne

Statement on 447 Collins St Melbourne

 Tuesday, 31 January 2012

The City of Melbourne understands that the building owner’s structural engineer is continuing their investigation at 447 Collins Street.

As the engineer’s building inspection is still ongoing, the City of Melbourne Emergency Order requires that the building remain cordoned off and closed to pedestrians.

The Order also requires that the owner erect a temporary gantry to ensure that when pedestrian areas are reopened, these areas are safe for pedestrians whilst potential remedial works take place.

The City of Melbourne has issued an Emergency Order to the building owner after a large piece of granite fell from a building located at 447 Collins Street Melbourne on the morning of Monday, 30 January. The remnants of the panel covered a considerable area. Police have cordoned off the area.

The City of Melbourne is aware that the managing agent and owner of the building have since engaged a registered civil engineer who is experienced in façade structures to inspect the façade and report on its condition. The engineer has inspected all the panels in the immediate vicinity early this afternoon to determine if and when it will be safe to reopen the forecourt.

During the engineer's investigation an additional area of the building adjacent to William Street was identified as being a potential risk.  A small section of the eastern side footpath in William Street has now been closed as a precaution whilst further investigations are undertaken.

The Emergency Order issued by the City of Melbourne today will outline what measures are required by the building owner to control access to the area, determine why this has occurred and determine what works are required to ensure there is no likelihood of any further or additional issues.
