Explore the power of your imagination, find your inner clown or try your hand at playing a homemade instrument as part of ArtPlay’s innovative program of summer and school holiday activities.
At ArtPlay, children up to the age of 13 and their families are encouraged to learn the language of art together.
The summer program runs on weekdays and weekends and includes free and affordable workshops and events.
A highlight of the summer program will be Melbourne based performance group Asking for Trouble’s Clown Kapow, a workshop and performance series all about the power of imagination.
The workshops from 11 to 15 January will give children an opportunity to explore character, movement and performance. Kapow performance, on Saturday 14 January at 11am and 2pm, will be an irreverent and comical look at the world of the superhero.
This Summer ArtPlay will also play host to Amiina, a six piece band from Iceland. On Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 January, Amiina will show children and families how to play some unusual and kooky instruments from around the house.
Sunday mornings from 10.30am to 12.30pm in January will feature free art and play sessions in the ArtPlay Backyard. Families are invited to come along and enjoy playing with various materials and props outdoors.
On 17, 18 and 19 February, the ArtPlay Backyard will be home to ceramic artist Ann Ferguson, landscape architect Jeff Nelson and early childhood specialist Ben Goodes who will be on hand to help children explore the backyard with clay.
In February, ArtPlay will also host free workshops as part of the newest event on Melbourne’s cultural calendar, the inaugural Melbourne Indigenous Arts Festival.
IDJA Dance Theatre and the Boon Wurrung Foundation will present an indigenous storytelling and shadow puppetry workshop for children and renowned singer/songwriter Kutcha Edwards will play a free concert designed to entertain and educate the younger generation about Indigenous Australia.
On February 18 and 19, bring your bikes and scooters along to ArtPlay’s Wheelie Workshop as part of the Sustainable Living Festival, where dirtgirl and scrapboy will help make your wheels beautiful, sustainable and safe.
