What's on City of Melbourne

Councillor Jackie Watts

Dr Jackie Watts has been a resident of the inner suburbs of Melbourne for over 35 years and has lived in Carlton for the past 12 years.

Jackie holds a Doctorate in Education (RMIT), postgraduate qualifications in Teaching and Librarianship (University of Melbourne) and a Bachelor of Arts (La Trobe University). Her areas of professional expertise include secondary and tertiary education, librarianship, research, vocational training and professional development, commerce (small & medium enterprises). She has experience in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors, on and offshore.

Jackie acknowledges that although Council must create conditions for economic prosperity within the municipality, it is obliged to also create an environment in which people and communities thrive. People make cities, not corporations. In her new role as Councillor, Jackie hopes to foster equitable, representative and efficient local government in Melbourne which balances the tension between commerce and development, demonstrating respect for people, built heritage and the natural environment.

Jackie has a track record of community activism, advocating on behalf of residents and ratepayers through her work with the Carlton Residents Association, CoRBA-Melbourne (Coalition of Resident & Business Associations) and more recently, the Carlton Alliance, which is dedicated to reunifying Carlton. Jackie is also a volunteer with the Office of the Public Advocate (Independent Third Person Program and the Prison Disciplinary Program).

Jackie enjoys classical music, dance, literature and dabbles in the creative arts.
