Councillors are paid an annual allowance set by the State Government.
The Lord Mayor receives $160,050, the Deputy Lord Mayor receives $65,470 and councillors receive $36,360.
These allowances recognise the great demands placed on councillors in carrying out their civic and statutory functions.
Councillors have a role in developing and communicating the City of Melbourne’s policies, strategies and projects. They also represent a capital city government and Melbourne's citizens and stakeholders to people locally, in Australia and overseas.
Councillors also represent the Council to more than 30 external organisations and advisory bodies. The demands and level of expectation placed on councillors in these roles is significant and varies from organisation to organisation, depending on specific structure, purpose and objectives.
The 'Councillor expenses and resources guidelines' (below) provide an overview of how the administration assists and supports the Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor and councillors in carrying out their role and official duties.
