Henietta

Hen has lost her little chooks. Will you help her take a look?

Be part of an unfolding story of Henietta and her missing chicks. Clues to the story are discovered by unwrapping lots of boxes in lots of paper revealing hidden treasures that become part of the interactive dance theatre experience.

This workshop does pass the parcel of a different kind. Fingers be ready for lots of unwrapping, toes be prepared for paper scrunching and imaginations be ready for action as you help Henietta find out where her little chooks have gone.

Sound Worlds

Awaken the hidden sounds in daily objects. They’re just waiting to spring out with a little encouragement, so rub, knock, bump and drop to get them started.

What about the noises hidden inside us? Get ready to turn your voice into a rainstorm, or perhaps a butterfly’s footsteps.

Nursery

Enter the Nursery, a safe and special play space where delight is devised moment by moment and where babies and performers together create beauty and a sense of connection.

Presented by two dancers and a musician and developed through extensive research into ways in which babies and their adults tune into one another, Nursery offers an immersive experience of dance and music, carefully designed to invite the babies' investigation of the people, objects, movements, sounds and word-scapes within it.

Age: Babies 4 to 18 months

This show is designed for adult and child pairs – one child with one adult per ticket.

Round and Round (paint)

Artist: Hayley Rivers child in a smock squeezes paint into a bowl

Round and round the painting goes, where it stops nobody knows. Join artist Hayley Rivers as she paints in circles.

Use salad spinners to spin paint around, roll marbles to make paint trails and explore printing and collage with circles of all shapes and sizes. Together we will create a colourful collaborative circle painting inspired by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky.

Wear old clothes, as you may get a bit messy. Your painted masterpieces will need time to dry so you will need to collect them at a later time.

Listen Softly (movement)

Listen to the wind
Watch the feathers fly every which way
Feel the crinkly crackly leaves
Smell the funny flowers
And see the colours running, rolling, falling into the stream

For a movement and play experience full of texture, sound, music and colour, join artist Emma Salzano in a little ArtPlay wonderland, which is sure to delight babies and carers alike.

All that is required is a good sense of fun and clothes you can move in.

Primo Primo

Artist: Alfredo Zinola and Felipe Gonzalez

Presented by Melbourne Festival and ArtPlay

Imagination and wonder take centre stage in PRIMO, an underwater spectacle created especially for the creative minds of 2 to 5 year olds. From the depths of an aquatic dreamscape PRIMO conjures a vivid sensory journey, letting the creative power of your toddler’s imagination build a worlds of his or her own devising.

In a bright lit, clear-sided pool, two dancers jump, twirl and float their arms and legs a whirl of bubbles and colour. Pressing their faces to the windows, the young audience will find themselves transported, carried away on strange tides into a world of underwater adventures.

PRIMO is a co-production with SCHAUBUDE BERLIN, fabric Postdam, Fondazione T. r.g., Barnes Crossing. PRIMO is supported by Kunststiftung NRW, Fonds Darstellende Kunste e.V. and Small size, big citizens. The company’s travel to Melbourne has been made possible thanks to Kunststiftung NRW.

Please note there will also be a free artist talk at ArtPlay on Thursday 16 October at 4pm.

Surprise! (sensory play)

Playing with Shadows (puppetry)

Watch as your drawings leap to life, off the page and onto the stage.

You are guided through the process of designing and making your own unique shadow characters with puppeteer Jenny Ellis.

With a little light, those characters will come alive before your eyes, in a real puppet theatre.

Couch Guerrillas (movement)

Do you like playing on your couch? What are your moves? What does your couch become in your imaginary games?

Join dance and design artists to explore the way we all use the family couch. We will discover how to put our moves together to tell a story. And we will also put our heads together to design the ideal family couch - however fantastical!

These workshops are part of the creative development of 'Couch Guerrillas', a dance theatre show reflecting family life in the lounge room. You can come back and see the show, and the couch in 2015.

This workshop is part of the ArtPlay New Ideas Lab program where artists are supported to develop new work for children and families.

Wonder Fish Weaving

Artists: Emma Barnesfeathers, leaves and string

Fishy Fishy swimming in the water.

I wonder, “What will your fish look like?” I wonder, “What colour will she be? And how big will she be?”

Create a Woven Wonder Fish using a mix of natural materials such as leaves and twigs as well as wool, found objects and recycled bit and bobs. Hang them on some netting to create your own seascape.

Sounds like Somewhere (sound and craft)

Enter a room where sounds and objects hang in the air. Is this under the sea? Or high up in a forest of trees? Make something to add to this intriguing world and listen to the sounds that change the way you look at the landscape all around.

This is a contemplative sound and visual installation designed for children to share with their grown ups. Explore different spaces and sonic worlds and add your own mobile-like creations to the landscape around you.

Join the artists to explore visual ideas that will help them develop this project for the final presentation in April 2015.
