Consultants, contractors and service providers are an important part of the building retrofit process. They provide the expertise required to analyse the building, identify the opportunities for improvement, design any changes to the building and then implement them.

How to find a consultant
There are several methods of finding a consultant.
Many professional associations publish directories which can be useful for finding consultants. (See Industry Capability Network and Energy Efficiency Council, below.) Ask other building managers/owners who have undertaken retrofit works for contacts and references.
Always make sure that the consultants and contractors you select have experience in the areas you are hiring them to work in and that they are properly licensed, registered and insured for the work they are going to perform.
Plumbing, electrical and refrigeration installation contractors all require separate licences to carry out their work, for example.
Consultants and contractors should be able to provide references from jobs they have performed in the past. These references should be followed up before a final decision is made.
Industry Capability Network (ICN)
ICN in partnership with the City of Melbourne has developed the 1200 Buildings Products and Services Register to provide commercial building owners/managers and facility managers with access to local retrofit products and services.
Energy Efficiency Council (EEC)
The Energy Efficiency Council also provides a comprehensive list of products and services relating to energy efficiency on their Products and Servies Directory.
